What is Base64?

Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents bytes with 64 printable characters. It is useful when data needs to travel through JSON, HTML, email, configuration files or APIs. Base64 is encoding, not encryption.

How to encode or decode Base64

  1. Paste text or Base64 into the input.
  2. Let Auto mode detect the format, or choose Encode / Decode.
  3. Review the result and Base64 Inspector.
  4. Copy text or download decoded binary data.

How Base64 encoding works

Every three input bytes (24 bits) become four 6-bit values mapped to the Base64 alphabet. That is why Base64 is usually about one third larger than its source.

Base64 code examples

const bytes = new TextEncoder().encode("Hello 👋");
const binary = String.fromCharCode(...bytes);
const encoded = btoa(binary);

Buffer.from("Hello 👋", "utf8").toString("base64");

Base64 in AI and APIs

Some APIs accept images and files as Base64 or data URLs because JSON is text-based. Base64 does not compress, encrypt or make data intelligent; it only changes how bytes are represented.

Base64 Encoder & Decoder FAQ

What is Base64?

Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding method that represents bytes using 64 printable characters. It is encoding, not encryption.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Anyone with a decoder can recover the original bytes.

What is the difference between Base64 and Base64URL?

Base64URL uses - and _ instead of + and /, and commonly omits trailing padding.

Why does Base64 end with =?

Padding completes the final four-character block when the source bytes do not divide evenly into groups of three.

Can I encode Unicode and emoji?

Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes before Base64 encoding.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Encoding, decoding and previews stay in this browser; this tool has no upload API.

Does Base64 use AI?

No. Base64 is a deterministic encoding format. APIs sometimes use it to carry binary data in text payloads.
