Social Media Character Limits 2026: Verified Limits by Platform

A source-tracked reference for the exact social-media field, counting unit and current documentation status — without turning old or surface-specific numbers into universal limits.

Last source review: September 11, 2026. Individual rows retain their own checked date and any access caveat.

Use the right field

One platform can have several valid limits.

A single ‘TikTok limit’ or ‘Threads limit’ can hide different text fields and publishing surfaces. This table names each field and keeps weighted characters, graphemes and UTF-16 runes separate.

Important caveats

Different counting systems can disagree.

X uses weighted counting

Standard posts are capped at 280 weighted characters. X URLs count as 23 characters, while emoji and many Unicode characters can carry more weight than a visible-character count.

Threads attached text is separate

10,000 characters describes an attachment, not an increase to the normal 500-character Threads post body.

TikTok uses API-specific UTF-16 limits

Video captions and photo posts have different documented fields. A visible emoji can occupy more than one UTF-16 unit.

Instagram access caveat remains visible

The 2,200 value is tied to Meta’s publishing API. Its source page was rate-limited during this review, so confirm it in the live publishing flow before relying on it.

How we label this data

Documentation first. Assumptions visible.

We prefer official Help, developer, advertising and newsroom documentation. When a platform does not publish a simple current rule, the page says so. A common preset remains a common preset; it is never silently promoted to an official hard limit.

Platforms and publishing surfaces change. If a live composer rejects your draft or crop, the live platform is the final authority.

Questions, answered

Limits are about how a platform counts.

Why can X differ from a normal character counter?

X uses weighted character rules. Its current developer documentation says URLs count as 23 characters regardless of their original length.

Do emoji always count as one character?

No. A visible emoji can be one grapheme but use more code points or UTF-16 units. X and TikTok each use their own counting model.

What is the current Threads limit?

A regular Threads post is 500 characters. The separate attachment feature supports up to 10,000 characters of attached text.

Why is Facebook marked not verified?

We did not locate a current public Facebook Help page that states a general-post hard maximum, so we do not repeat the commonly quoted legacy figure as verified 2026 guidance.
